Virtual Dragon Sheesha Puppet
Description
This multi-headed creature was inspired in part by Shesha, the great many-headed serpent found in Hindu tradition. Shesha is closely associated with Vishnu and is often represented as a vast cosmic serpent with multiple hoods. That imagery helped inspire the idea of a creature made from several independently moving heads and necks.
The puppet first appeared in the second part of The Archer’s Journey. Its visual design was adapted from an earlier character concept that had originally been scrapped, giving the unused design a new role within the production.
The original stage puppet was built as a large, heavy multi-headed creature. Its size gave it a strong physical presence onstage, but the weight also made it difficult to operate. During use, parts of the puppet eventually broke, revealing problems with the weight and with the way the heads were supported and moved.
This virtual version is a prototype for studying a different approach to the head mechanism. Each head and neck is treated as its own connected puppet chain. The neck rotates from a fixed root point, while each head rotates from the socket at the end of its neck. This allows the heads to move independently while remaining attached to their original joints.
The prototype is mainly a movement and engineering test. It allows us to experiment with nodding, looking left and right, neck swaying, and coordinated movement across all four heads before attempting another physical version of the puppet.
